Goal
The Goal of this project was to take something that was a benign subject matter and make it awful or take something awful and make it pretty
For this project, I wanted to create something beautiful and innocent and turn it into something awful or portray it for its true meaning. One pf the first things that came to mind was the song "Ring Around The Rosie," a common nursery rhyme. Many children sing this song and dance in circles while they have no clue the true meaning of the song. The song originated in the 1600's during the Black Plague. The line "ring around the rosie" is attributed to a red rash in a shape of a ring that would form on the skin of the victims; where the line "pockets full of posies" is attributed to the victims filling their pockets with flowers and other sweet smelling things to ward off the plague. One of the final lines, "ashes, ashes," refers to the ashes of the dead, cremated bodies.
The song is sung throughout the world and no one knows the true meaning of the song. I wanted to display the true meaning. I placed the baby dolls in a circular pattern surrounded by ashes and posies, died black. Also, playing on the piece is a recording of young children singing the song over and over. By creating this project, I wanted to evoke an emotion that most people don't feel when looking at art, guilt. I wanted them to feel guilty for cheerfully singing this song, when they were young...
