Art and Text

Goal
How do you make text visual? How can writing and visual art overlap? This project is an opportunity to investigate how words can be an integral part of your artistic expression.

Ten Commandments

Thou shall not create carved images of thy God

Thou shall not use the lords name in vein.

Thou shall not covet thy neighbors house.

Thou shall honor your mother and father.

Thou shall not steal.

Thou shall not commit adultery.

Thou shall not murder.

Thou shall not bear false witness.

Thou shall honor thy sabbath day.

Thou shall have no other Gods before me.

This was my favorite project, I loved creating this series of photos. Thinking about text, I was thought of the most important pieces of text throughout history, the Bible, the Quran, etc. until finally I came up with the Ten Commandments. I went out and photographed different places and things that helped represent each of the Ten Commandments. Then, once the photos were printed, I cut out each letter making up the wording of the commandment, from the newspaper. This was tedious and time consuming, but I think it added a very intense aspect to the project. It brought the viewer from a level of thinking it is "pretty" to being disturbed. I translated the feeling of the commandments from words of wisdom to fearful words, all created by the ambiance of the wording.
