Plant Pattern

Goal

The piece requires equal commitment to observation and imagination. Start from an actual plant and render what you see. Activate the negative space with a pattern/texture of your choice so that figure and ground are held in a dynamic balance.

"Absence of Plant"

(35x38)

Thinking about plants, I wanted to create a piece that spoke to the origins of plants and plant use. The background consists of the actual juices and colors produced from rubbing berries against the canvas. The basket represents the native aspect of collecting berries and fruits to survive in the harsh winters. Using small sticks and twigs, I used a forrest green spray paint to create an absence of sticks.

REVISION

In my revision, I added more color and texture to create a deeper depth to the piece. I also added more berry juices and leaf impressions. I wanted to add the extra color to excentuate the pattern of sticks and finger marks.
