Goal
The goal of this project was to find a way to visually or conceptually map a different event.
For this project, I thought pretty out of the box; I wanted to map something that no one ever thinks of mapping. Using a bed sheet as my canvas, I mapped birth and conception dates. I started by sending an email out to the whole school asking their birthday month. I got over 200 responses and I used almost all of the dates in my project! Each color blotch of strings represents a month, starting with January, in the blue. The color of string corresponds with the colors of that month, for example, February is a pink, for Valentines Day. Then, after I sewed the months in, I used a thick black string to tie each birth month to its month of conception. For example January goes to September, nine months after.
Through this project I wanted to create a map that made people think and feel uncomfortable. Initially, I wanted the viewer to be drawn in by the piece visually, then see the meaning of the piece, hanging below it, and immediately feel uncomfortable.
